I grew up in northern California playing year-round sports, including soccer, swimming, martial arts, track and field, and many others. When I moved to southern California in High School I narrowed my focus and lettered in wrestling. Around this time I also discovered parkour. Shortly after High School, I enlisted in the Marine Corps where I served 4 years. Along with being taught about general fitness and rucking, I also achieved a green belt in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP). It was during my enlistment that I found the sport of obstacle course racing after completing the nation’s first OCR, the Camp Pendleton Mud Run, and have been hooked ever since. I began working at MROC in 2014, and after a 3-year stint in the Bay Area, am back!
When I finished my time in the Marine Corps I took with me a lot of knowledge, experience, and confidence. Unfortunately, I also took multiple injuries with me as well, including a herniated disk, chronic shin splints, and a shoulder injury. It was communicated to me that my running and dynamic lifting days were behind me. I did not accept this and instead began to educate myself on repairing my body and learning to move it as it was made to move. With the help of this education, I can now run and ruck further and with less pain and lift more and for longer than I ever could while in the Marines. Being able to take this knowledge and pass it on in order to help others do more of what they want for longer is what drives me to keep learning and keep coaching.
One of my favorite feelings in the world is helping someone accomplish something they didn’t think they could. Whether it is coaching someone over a 6 ft. wall, teaching technique on the salmon ladder, or giving motivation while someone breaks a workout PR, it brings me joy. The word “can’t” does not exist around me.
